Today’s Webtoon (2022)
Quick Take: Today’s Webtoon (2022), starring Choi Daniel, Nam Yoon-su, and Kim Se-jeong 9.1/10. 16 episodes, 60 minutes each.
Synopsis: After years of competitive-level judo, On Ma-eum embarks on a new career as a webtoon editor. Her job is to find and nurture webtoon artists, who all seem to be needy and temperamental. Her immediate supervisor, the Deputy Editor (Choi Daniel) mentors her. Her cynical co-worker Goo Jun-yeong is gradually won over by her dedication and enthusiasm. Her novice artist is nurtured toward mental health. The romance element is somewhat lacking but otherwise all good.
Review: Kim Se-jeong plays much the same cheerful, feisty character as in Business Proposal (2022), a bigger hit which aired right before Webtoon. It was nice to see two leading men who are not from the usual pantheon. Supporting roles played well include Ko Chang-seok as Ma-eum’s father, Im Chul-soo as a webtoon artist with a neurotic girlfriend, and rising actor Kim Do-hoon as a wanna-be webtoon artist with serious trauma issues that get ignored way too long.
Rewatchable - 3, Compelling - 4, Plot/ Story/Writing - 9, Acting/Casting - 10, Production - 10, Bonus - 5. Bonus points for solid character development, and insights into the business of publishing webtoons.
