Bubble (2022)
Quick Take: Bubble (2022), Japanese anime film. 100 minutes.
Review: This is a retelling of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid, so you know how it ends. Mysterious bubbles fall from the sky and flood Tokyo, which is abandoned by everyone except gangs of kids who hold Parkour competitions. (I had to google Parkour, too.) To win the contest prize — food — their team have to be first to capture the flag by running, climbing, vaulting, rolling, and so forth. One of the most talented is a boy named Hibiki. When he gets trapped underwater, a bubble becomes a girl and saves him. He names her Uta. Together they stop the bubble activity, and Tokyo dries out and begins to rebuild.
Bubble got high praise from critics for visuals and musical score.
Quick, cute, and fun. Sometimes you want something light between series dramas. Bubble is a good option, along with You Drive Me Crazy and The Door into Summer.
